Intellectual Skills

Most of the Poker players have different specialties, on the game they play that will make their best hand. Compare to other games, poker is one of the casino games that will need your intellectual skills. I can say that this game is not based on your luck, it is based on the way how you play it, by having some techniques to beat your opponent.

You can have different techniques with this game, other players bluffing each other because it's part of their technique. Maybe some of them may offend others with the way they play, but it's normal their strategy is allowed because they do not cheat. You just need to practice what they called "poker face" for you to master this kind of technique.

While I was surfing the net I found an article that talks about being expert in the game Poker. It is entitled Becoming a Specialist in POKERBLOG the author says that "The easiest way to decide what type of specialist you want to be is to just be realistic about what type of poker is your strongest. If you’re already crushing single-table tournaments, then continue to work your craft until you hit the upper peaks of competitive play. Likewise for anyone who really only gets motivated by playing nosebleed
ring games."

In poker there are different types of game, you can buy-in to a tournament style or the cash game style. You need to choose your specialty so that you can enhance your intellectual skills with this type of game. Because there's a big difference with that kind of game. The tournament style is the tougher game than cash game style. Because in tournament style you only given a certain amount of chips and if you lose, you can never bring back what you have lost. But in cash game style it's easy to bluff and to have a decision in every game because you can buy-in again if you have lose.

The author also says that "As you absorb new information, put it into play in actual games and then go back and review what went right and wrong. Do this and you’ll be treating poker with a whole new level of respect and dedication that most are unable to achieve, and that’s when you’ll know that your specialist reputation is well deserved."

In this kind of game, your intellectual skill will be enhance and you are not relying on your luck. Maybe it's a combined luck and intellectual skill.

Is it really a matter of LUCK?

We all know the roulette game, and most of us think that its just a matter of luck, when you play it. Because you just bet for the number you predict that would come out. But did you ever think that there's a scientific study about this game?

When I am in high school, I had a subject Physics and it studies about matter. In line with that, I was thinking about the game roulette. Because I know that science can explain the possible outcome in roulette. And I am confused if this game is really a matter of luck?

While I was surfing the net, I came across an article entitled Roulette Better spills physics behind victory it talks about that in a roulette game they can measure the bounce of the ball and what would come out as a result.

The Author states that "Using a subtle counting device similar to Farmer's, the pair was able to predict in which half of the wheel the ball would fall in 13 out of 22 trials. In three trials, the model predicted the exact pocket. That is equivalent to taking the odds from 2.7 per cent in the house's favour (on European roulette wheels) to 18 per cent in the player's favour. That is a very small number of trials, so they then confirmed their technique via 700 trials using an automated camera system, which would be too conspicuous to use in a casino (arxiv.org/abs/1204.6412)."

With that percentage given, we can say that its not a matter of luck, because there's  an alternative way to know what possible outcome would come out. But as a Gambler they just use their luck in every bet they made, because it takes time to know the technique behind that game.

The author also says that "Farmer says Small and Tse's model is very similar to his own, except that they assume that the main force slowing the ball down is friction with the rim, whereas he found that it is air resistance." When I read this part of his article, I was thinking about the cheats in casino because of air resistance they can control the possible outcome in a game.

For me, this theory is not applicable to all of the gamblers. Because there's a possibility that other casino will cheat on the players. So even if you know how to compute for the possible outcome that would come out there's a big probability that you predict the wrong one, so it's better for you to depend on your luck with this kind of game.

The Conditions

Most of us think that gambling is an addicting game. But gamblers see it in different ways. If others think that it only give you stress and a lot of debts, for them its opposite. For me, they can say that its opposite because they love what they're doing and no one can stop them. It feels like they are so in love in a person, and they cannot see the negative side of it.

While I was surfing the net I came across an article that talks about the rewards of gambling, entitled The Effects of Gambling. The author says I gamble because:
  • I love the thrill of playing.
  • I know a big payout could solve all my problems.
  • Gambling is my only shot at becoming a millionaire.
  • I feel important when I win. I love being able to treat my family and friends.
  • I have a sure system. It's just a matter of time before I win again.
  • When I am on, I can make money fast and easily.
  • Gambling lets me forget my problems and pain for a while.
  • Gambling is the one thing in my life that is just for me. When I gamble, I'm in control.
  • Gambling gets me out of the house. I feel safe and welcome.
  • All my friends gamble.
Those following reasons are exactly the answer for why do people gamble. For others who do not gamble they would probably think that those reasons are for kids who wants, to always get what they want. But as a gambler that's what they only want to have more money, to give the needs of their loved ones or treat their loved ones.

Also gambling has a lot of negative issues, and because of that some of the family members of a gambler or loved ones make it a point that they wanted their loved ones to stop gambling. And it becomes the problem that gambling give to a family. In the article I've read the author also gives some negative effects of gambling. and these are the following:
  • My partner is threatening to leave me if I don't stop.
  • We fight all the time about my gambling.
  • I'm tired of sneaking around, lying and hiding my losses.
  • My reputation has been hurt.
  • Creditors are hassling me. I'm looking at bankruptcy.
  • Gambling is all I ever think about. It has taken over my life.
  • I've stopped caring about things that should be important to me.
  • I've borrowed money from so many people. I feel ashamed to face them.
  • I'm afraid I'll lose my job because I'm always so distracted.
  • My health is suffering.
  • I don't even enjoy gambling most of the time.
  • I feel like such a loser. Sometimes I hate myself so much I want to end it all.
In life there's always a positive and negative side but don't be fooled by that happiness. Because "lahat ng sobra ay masama"

In every game there's always what we called CHEAT

In life, we cannot escape from cheaters. There's always cheat in a particular part in our life. But I wonder why those people do cheat? If they can get what they want without cheating, but it takes time and hard work for them to reach they're goals.

If I were a cheater, I would probably cheat in every part of my life, because it would be easy for me to get what I want. And it does not require too much effort. But at the end of the day, your conscience will always knock on you.

But as a person, I would never do cheat. Because I believe that even you are the best player in the world, there's a time that you will lose. Because you're not lucky on that day or simply it's not your day.

While I was surfing the net, I came across an article entitled Why Do People Cheat? it talks about how the author see cheating "as a natural extension of their options." The author says that "So despite the moral antipathy some people have with cheating, many of the most respected bodies and establishment authorities engage in the practise daily without conscience. While there is nothing noble or good about cheating, it is a fact of life that along with our ability and oft chosen intent to lie is our ability and chosen intent to cheat when it is clearly more advantageous to do so."

The author says that most respected bodies engaged in cheating, I can say that this is true. Because if you have a big name in the public, all of the mass will respect you, and they will not see your other side, like your negative side. So as a famous person, he/she will use his/her popularity to make some illegal acts, like cheating. Without the prior notice of the public.

Like in casino if you have more money, you can easily manipulate the game by negotiating with the dealer. Because the dealer is the one who manage the game. So he can do some illegal acts for you to win, because he know he will benefit from you.

The author also says that "the only sure way to win is to cheat!" I can say that there's a possibility for you to win if you do cheat, but winning is so easy for the people who do not cheat. For them winning is their hobby, because they have some strategies and other techniques to win but not CHEATING.

I can compare our life in a game, sometimes you win sometimes you lose. And in life, there is also a cheat. But remember CHEATERS NEVER WIN.

Exercise 1: Formal Language

"We all know that being a gambler is a risk-taker, Sometimes you win sometimes you might get lose. But that's the life of a gambler. I wonder how these people get addicted, when at first they just want to experienced how to play in casino and just to have fun."

Gambling is a risky game. A player may win and may lose too. There are some reasons why people get into gambling and eventually get addicted to it. Curiously is one factor, how it was played, have an experience and have fun playing it. Another one is to try their luck and earn some money.

A Gambler

We all know that being a gambler is a risk-taker, Sometimes you win sometimes you might get lose. But that's the life of a gambler. I wonder how these people get addicted, when at first they just want to experienced how to gamble and just to have fun.

As a student for some time it also happen to me, when were playing cards we decided to play poker that involves money. And I can say that we get addicted to it, and sometimes we feel like dying if we don't play poker in one day. Sometimes it serves us bonding moment with my friends but its a serious matter because it involves money, sometimes our friends get offended with the way we bluff each other.

An article I found in Addiction Blog called Top 10 signs of gambling addiction the author discuss how people get addicted into gambling. The author give these following signs:

1. Inability to stop or reduce gambling
2. Obsessive or compulsive thinking about gambling
3. Continued gambling despite negative consequences: loss of job, relationship, or opportunities
4. Increased tolerance; needing larger or more frequent wagers to experience the same “rush”
5. Emotional symptoms of withdrawal when you stop or reduce gambling (irritation, restlessness)
6. Needing to gamble to improve your mood, escape problems, win back losses
7. Breaking the law in order to get gambling money or recover gambling losses (stealing, fraud,)
8. Asking for financial assistance as a result of gambling
9. Denial of a gambling problem or lying to friends or family about behavior
10. Frequent changes of mood

I can say that those signs are being encountered by people who always play in casino. But as a gambler they should know the consequences of it, and they should be responsible enough to manage themselves if they're losing.

When I read this article I think I am becoming a gambler. Because when I won my eagerness to win continue. And when I get lose I try to win back all my money. But sometimes I tried to tell myself that if I continue this kind of attitude I might get lose every time I play. So I have to control myself, when I'm already winning I have to stop because in life, the winner can never takes it all.
