HW8: Filipino Gamblers

Filipino hobbies are playing cards, bonding with their friends, neighbors and family. And it's normal for us to see them in streets, playing cards like; pusoy way, pusoy dos, tong-its, lucky9 and bingo etc. For others they just play these games just for fun, or to have bond with their friends. But for the gamblers, they think that there is no sense in playing those games without betting.

Filipinos are good in inventing new things and even games to play on. So that, we have a lot of card games that other countries do not have. And Filipinos are attached to those games because there are some occasion that they play those games. Like in the wake of a departed ones.

While I was surfing the net, I came an across an article entitled Sugal Pinoy it talks about the different card games and some gambling games that the Philippines have. And the Culture of the Filipinos about Gambling. The author said that "Sugal, sinong pinoy ang di marunong magsugal?

They said that Filipinos are born to be a Gambler, but it doesn't mean the negative side of it. In fact, we can compare Life into Gambling. In life we fight for what we want to have, sometimes we got it and sometimes not. Like in gambling we play because we want to have more money, and sometimes we got the big pot but not all the times that we are winning, there will be times that we are losing.

Also if you want to have something, you will take risk just to get it. Because there is no easy way to have the precious things in this world.

HW7: Gambling as a Business

We all know that having a business involving gambling is quite difficult. Because you will take a lot of risks with this kind of business. And not all of the people in the society can accept this kind of business, especially those in religious groups.

But did you ever think, that having this kind of business can increase the economy of a country? While I was surfing the net I came across an article entitled Gambling in the Philippines that talks about the benefits of having this kind of business.

The author gives rise to the Gambling Society, because he stated that "Few people immediately gravitate towards the Philippines as one of the best places in the world to find an exciting game of blackjack or a high-stakes poker table.  And yet, it is exactly this image of exclusivity and indulgence that the Philippines would like to promote, which is why they’ve begun a targeted campaign to build casinos and resorts throughout the islands that will bring in the crowd that currently flocks to other hubs of gambling in Asia." As a business minded person, the author has a nice point of view, because the Philippines has a lots of tourist spots, and they can use it by putting up a business involving gambling. So that the tourists and even Filipinos can find a way to relax at the same time to have fun in a Casino.

And we all know that some of us are thinking to engage in Gambling, to try our luck. And if it works, we will try again. And the business people will take advantage with this kind of mindset of the people. They can put a Casino near the Tourist spots so that they can also catch the attention of the Tourists.

The Government see it in a positive way, but did they even considered the point of view of those who are in religious sects? Maybe this kind of business may put again the collision of Government and Religion. But if this can contribute to the economy of the Philippines I think, the religion sects should agree with this business.

HW6: CHAPTER2

Chapter 2
DISCUSSION

What are the reasons why Filipinos are prone to Gambling Addiction compare to other Nationality?

Definition and different Types of Gambling

Gambling is define as playing a particular game involving money. It may result of winning a lot of money or losing all of it. But not only money can represent a bet, it can be properties. Any game involving money as a consequence of losing in a game is Gambling.

Gambling has different types and these are legal and illegal activities. Here in the Philippines there are lots of Illegal Activities involving gambling example of these are Jueteng, Jai-Alai, Sakla, Sabong of different animals and Perya. And those Legal Activities are found inside the Casino.

Those Illegal Activities are found in streets and in slam areas. A huge number of Filipinos patronizing those illegal activities, it's because of a cheaper bet and a big jackpot that can be win by an individual. Compare to those Legal Activities inside the casino it's expensive, and before an individual can play in Casino, they must first have to register and they will cost them a bit expensive. Those illegal activities remains illegal because it does not contain tax, and it is not operated by PAGCOR.

Those Legal Activities are found inside the casino, and being enjoyed by Filipinos who have enough money to spend in Gambling. Inside the Casino the stakes are high, and lots of money could go to waste. The different games that may be seen in a Casino are Poker, Slot Machines, Roulette, Black Jack and Video Slots. In those games an individual may got the jackpot by having more capital to gamble.

Factors influencing Filipinos to Gamble

A. Poverty

The Population of Filipinos are getting higher and most of them are in the state of Poverty. Those people are getting involved into gambling because it's the easy way to earn a lot of money and can sustain their daily living. And those people are the one who makes illegal activity alive.

B. Unemployed

The Population of Filipinos are getting higher and most of them are Unemployed. Those unemployed are usually in the streets doing some gambling events like playing Bingo, Tong-its, Pusoy and Mahjong. They are the ones that give rise to the Gambler Population here in the Philippines.

C. Culture

As part of Filipino Culture, there's a particular occasion that Filipinos are becoming a Gambler. And these occasions are Fiesta and Wake of departed ones. During Fiesta there's a Perya in a barrio. And as part of Perya there's a different Gambling events happening every night like Bingo, Color Game, Dice and Roulette. Those people who lived in that barrio will go every night to a perya just to Gamble and have fun. Also every fiesta the baranggay will set a Tupada or Sabong in there place. During the wake of departed ones, there's also a gambling event. Example of those gambling events are Sakla, Tong-its, Mahjong, Kara-Krus. All the neighbors will go to the wake and make that opportunity to gamble.

HW5: Survey Report

For me to finish this research paper, I conducted an online survey which will help me to gain more ideas and knowledge about gambling. I asked 12 persons to respond on my survey. And out of those 12 persons 8 of them are Male and the rest are Female.

Luckily all of those Respondents are Gamblers, so I've got a lot of ideas and knowledge from them. Those respondents are all students and the range of their age are 18-24 yrs old.

Based on the conducted survey, 75% of them believed that there's a cheat in Gambling, and 25% are not.

Most of the Respondent have the same answered to the question "What particular game are they playing?"But none of them playing or betting in a karera ng kabayo and sabong.

They also have same answers when they asked them what problems did they encountered in Gambling, they only have one answer and it is, Gambling is all about money you want to play with and sometimes you didn't noticed that your throwing away your money, in short they encountered losing a lot of money and being stressed after they lose. However, some of them said that they can bring back the money they lost by playing again. And that makes them a COMPULSIVE GAMBLER.

HW2: Inside the Gambler's Mind

In life there's always a reason why do we get attached to something. And I wonder why some people attached to gambling. If there are some tactics they put on casino so that people may attached to it and become addicted to it.

But every Gambler has a different reason why they get addicted in gambling. Maybe because they want to get the jackpot price so they just keep on betting and trusting their own luck. But did they ever think that when they bet they might lose all their money.

While I was surfing the net I came across an article that talks about Why do people become addicted to Gambling the author states the different reasons why people become addicted to gambling. The author gives 4 reasons these are; The Illusion of being able to control chance, The lure of the Jackpot, Gambling Fever, The belief their luck will change.

The author gives the exact reason why do people become addicted to gambling. And the casino's or other gambling event will use these idea for them to gain more subscribers or for the gamblers to patronize them.

HW1: Background of Survey

After weeks of researching about Gambling, I learned different things about gambling. Like the different types of gamblers, the good and bad effect of it. And why some people look at it as a bad habit. But there are some questions on my mind that haven't answered yet.

To be able to come-up with my research paper I need to survey some questions to know the different opinions of other people. And I prepare some survey questions to be answered.

My survey would be answer by different kind of person in the society, it is good to know their age and gender.Next I would like to ask them what is their stand in gambling, if they are pro or anti. And then, if they are Gamblers or if they have friends who are engaged in gambling addiction and how many of them. I would also want to know if they believed that there's a cheat in gambling. And if they have plans to stop from being Compulsive Gamblers.  I also need to know what are the different games in Gambling, and what particular game they are addicted to. From being a Compulsive Gambler, I would also want to know if they encountered some problems caused by Gambling, and what are those problems. And I would like them to give some advice or suggestion to the Compulsive Gamblers. And Lastly, I would like to know if they think that Filipinos are more prone to Gambling Addiction rather than other nationality, and why do they think if they're answer is yes or no.

This survey will be answer by different people in the society, to know their stand in Gambling, And to know if majority of them are male or female. Also to know their age. If this survey will be given to them, I think most of their answers would be the same. And I think that most of them will have a lot of answer in the question, What are the different Gambling event/games here in the Philippines?

Ways to stop Gambling Addiction

Almost all of the gamblers when you ask them if they want to stop their addiction in gambling, they will probably answer that NO I will not stop gambling, because it gives me the things that I want. But they never notice if they continue gambling they might lost their loved ones, a lot of money and they might get insane.

There are some ways to stop gambling. But those steps are not easy to follow. Because a compulsive gambler do not want to stop their vices. For them to have a better life they should now stop or lessen their addiction to it.

While I was surfing the net I came up to an article entitled Gambling Addiction:10 Ways To Stop Gambling Before It Is Too Late. It discusses the different ways to stop gambling, and the author says as a lesson
"Overall, gambling addiction is one of the hardest addictions to beat. It is also one of the most dangerous, because of the high suicide rate with this horrible affliction.
If you or a loved one has a gambling problem, try to quit gambling now. When you stop gambling, your life will improve, and you will reclaim your life that you once had before."

The author is correct that when you stop gambling your life will improve, because you will not be stressed anymore about your debts, your bad beats during the game. Also you will be closed to your loved ones, and you will have more time to see the beautiful points of view of life. That it's not all about gambling.
